At DungeonFog we always strive to push the boundaries of mapmaking to new limits.
We are always open to explore new technologies, talk to developers and creatives around the world and gather feedback on how to create a unique experience around the creative process of mapmaking.
With our newest feature we are about to break those limits.
Map making will never be the same again.
Back in 2019 we had the opportunity to participate in a collective developers symposium about deep learning and how to use AI methods for enhanced user interface integrations, at the Technical University Perchtoldsdorf.
Together with a team of students we started to develop ai.MAP an image based AI algorithm capable of learning from the maps that you have created.
Utilizing ai.MAP’s deep learning we were able to create an advanced AI that mimics the workings of a human mapmaker through processing visual data and making autonomous decisions in the creative process.
For the past one-and-a-half years ai.MAP has learned (under our supervision), to draw from our databases and combine her learnings with the user-input libraries that we have created.
Teaching a fresh AI was a lot more demanding than we expected and it took a lot longer than we anticipated, but thanks to our students and a technological shift we did not expect, in 2020 we finally made the needed break-through.

When I heard about this new feature, it was hard for me to stand still!
Our biggest challenge with ai.MAP was that she was dependent on rather high resolution based input. With the camera technologies on the market - especially the software based image enhancers, we were not able to get past a 42% accuracy on her interpretations.
But - as unfortunate as the global events in 2020 were - it brought a shift in the paradigms of webcam image-enhancement-software. With the global spread of sold webcams, image enhancers received a huge uplift and new open source projects allowed us to reach the needed accuracy ai.MAP was demanding from us.
